Getting to Know Gainey

Getting to Know Gainey

As a family-owned winery, we at Gainey Vineyard value our employees like they are part of our extended family. Our amazing staff have allowed this winery to flourish through the years. We thought it would be nice for you to get to know some of our staff, learn about they spend a day off,  why they enjoy living in the Santa Ynez Valley, and which Gainey wine is their favorite.

John Falcone, General Manager

1.      Favorite way to spend a day off: Watching March Madness! Otherwise cooking with a great bottle of wine.

2.      Best place to get a taco in the SYV: To Be Determined

3.      Favorite Gainey wine: It’s all about the moment so there are several depending on what I am doing such as food pairing, relaxing, hot day, or hot date etc!!!

4.      Best place to eat a nice meal in SYV: SY Kitchen

5.      Why I love living in the SYV: Agricultural driven community

7.      Before working at Gainey what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve had: Not sure, I have been working in the wine industry all my life since 19 years old, so busing tables at Golden West Pancake house in high school doesn’t count.

8.      The Gainey event I enjoy working the most: Gainey open house, oh wait, no the Evan’s Ranch Lunch, actually the Bordeaux Seminar!

9.      The most enjoyable way to relax in the SYV is: I guess riding a horse, but I don’t ride.

10.  Best breakfast in SYV: My house

  • Favorite way to spend a day off: with friends and family in nature. Mountain biking with friends is pretty hard to beat.
  • Best place to get a taco in the SYV: My house on Wednesday nights
  • Favorite Gainey wine: I'm a winemaker that's like asking a parent who their favorite child is. We all have one but we will NEVER admit it, just ask my mom!
  • Best place to eat a nice meal in SYV: Grappolo every Thursday night.
  • Why I love living in the SYV: it's a great jump spot for all my favorite outdoor adventures plus it's small and quiet. We are only a 20 min drive from the entrance to the backcountry which is where I prefer to spend most my free time.
  • My favorite part about my job: creating wines that people love.
  • Before working at Gainey what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve had: telemarketing golf clubs, true story!
  • The Gainey event I enjoy working the most: any of our barrel tasting events. I love visiting with our club members who have really become close friends over the years; they always refill my sails with ambition and focus. You can't let your friends down, after all!
  • The most enjoyable way to relax in the SYV is: in the back country along a creeks edge with Sauv Blanc and good friends.
  • Best breakfast in SYV: I'm not a huge breakfast person but I do enjoy a crepe now and again from Paula's.
